Hands-On Healing: Why Percussion Instruments Are Perfect To Begin Your Sound Healing Journey
Jul 15, 2025
Stepping into the world of sound healing doesn’t have to be overwhelming! Some of the most powerful sound healing instruments are also the simplest – intuitive, tactile, and deeply rooted in human history.
Percussion instruments are a natural gateway for beginners because they connect us to rhythm, nature, and the innate healing power of vibration. At The Sound Healing Academy, we believe that sound healing should be accessible, empowering, and joyful from the very beginning of your journey.
That’s why percussion instruments play a key role in our Level 1 Certified Sound Healing Courses. If you’re feeling called to begin your journey, percussion is a beautiful place to start.
Why Percussion? The Power of Rhythm & Simplicity
Percussion instruments allow anyone to pick up a frame drum, a shaker, or a sansula and start creating healing sounds. These instruments are:
- Intuitive – you feel your way through them, and they engage your senses and encourage free expression.
- Accessible – many are lightweight, affordable, and simple to use in both home and community settings.
- Empowering – playing a percussion instrument connects you with your inner rhythm, grounding you and fostering confidence.
Most importantly, percussion speaks the language of the body! The beat of the frame drum echoes the heartbeat, and the swish of an ocean drum calls to the sea within us. This makes percussion ideal for emotional release, relaxation, and energetic realignment. Let’s explore some of the most beginner-friendly sound healing instruments we love working with in our sound healing courses!
The Ocean Drum: The Sound of The Sea In Your Hands
The ocean drum creates soothing, wave-like sounds that immediately transport you to the sunny beach. This instrument mimics the sound of gently crashing waves, helping you connect to the element of water and the qualities of flow and emotional release.
Whether used in meditation, sound baths, or personal sound healing sessions, the ocean drum calms the nervous system, relieves stress, and brings a sense of spaciousness. It’s ideal for beginners who want to start creating gentle, ambient soundscapes.
You can learn how to incorporate the ocean drum and more in our Level 1 Foundations Of Integral Sound Healing (Multi-Instrument) Online Course, now 50% OFF this month!
The Frame Drum: A Primal, Heart-Centered Pulse
The frame drum is one of the most ancient instruments on Earth. Its steady, rhythmic beat resonates with the human heart, helping to center and regulate the body’s internal rhythms.
Used across cultures for ritual, healing, and ceremony, this powerful yet simple drum is especially effective for:
- Anxiety relief
- Trauma release
- Grounding and meditation
It’s a beautiful tool for those looking to connect with their deeper emotional layers, and it features prominently in our Level 1 Foundation Certificate: Sound Healing With Rhythm & Drums Online Course, where you’re guided to work with the healing pulse of rhythm.
Tip: If you’ve ever tapped your fingers to a beat or felt calmed by the sound of a drum, this instrument is already in your soul!
Sansula: Gentle Melodies for Deep Healing
Though melodic, the sansula blends the qualities of percussion with delicate, music-box tones. Played with the thumbs, it produces ethereal, calming vibrations that are wonderful for:
- Inner child healing
- Soothing overactive minds
- Creating a safe space for emotional exploration
Its simplicity makes it incredibly inviting for beginners. There are no wrong notes, just gentle, heart-opening sounds. The Sansula invites a gentle entry into sound healing and is especially suited for self-care and one-on-one client work.
Other Beginner-Friendly Percussion Instruments
- Tingsha Cymbals: Bright, high-frequency tones that cut through mental fog and clear energetic fields, perfect for transitions and focus.
- Shakers & Rattles: Excellent for energizing the body, breaking up stagnant energy, and creating uplifting rhythms.
- Chimes & Bells: Gentle and celestial, chimes help mark intention, clear space, and create harmonic resonance in a sound healing session.
A Simple Frame Drum Practice You Can Try at Home
One of the things we love about the frame drum is how it can be used not only to create healing sounds for others but also as a tool for personal grounding and nervous system regulation. Below is a simple, soothing practice you can do at home, even if you’ve never picked up a drum before.
This practice uses the “heartbeat rhythm,” a slow, steady beat that mimics the natural rhythm of the human heart. It can bring you back into your body, quiet the mind, and create a felt sense of safety and inner stillness.
What you’ll need:
- Frame drum
- Quiet space where you won’t be disturbed
- Optional: a cushion or yoga mat to sit comfortably
Step 1: Find your seat
Sit comfortably with your spine upright and your drum resting on your lap or held vertically against your chest.
Step 2: Close your eyes
Take a few deep, slow breaths to arrive in the moment. Feel your body supported by the ground beneath you.
Step 3: Begin the heartbeat
Use your hand or a soft mallet to gently tap the center of the drum with a slow, steady rhythm, just like the sound of a heartbeat (about 60–70 beats per minute is a good place to start).
Step 4: Sync with your breath
Inhale for 3 beats, hold for 4, and exhale for 5. Let the rhythm guide your breath into a slower, more regulated pace.
Step 5: Stay with it
Play the rhythm continuously for 3 to 5 minutes. If thoughts arise, simply return your attention to the beat.
Step 6: Close gently
After a few minutes, let the rhythm fade. Sit in silence and observe how you feel.
The steady beat acts as an anchor, helping your brain and body sync with a rhythm that feels safe, familiar, and grounding. This practice is especially helpful in moments of stress, anxiety, or overwhelming emotions, and it’s a powerful way to begin or end your day.
Pro Tip: Pair this frame drum exercise with a short spoken affirmation, such as “I am safe,” “I am here,” or “I am grounded.”
